How to Prevent Suspension Trauma

Knowing how to prevent something from happening could save many lives or accidents. There are several things to do ahead of time so suspension trauma will be less likely to happen. Here are some rules to keep you safe.

Have your workers in harnesses work in pairs so they are never alone
Make sure your workers are alert and well rested
Limit the time in suspension to under 5 minutes
If you have to be in longer make sure there are footholds so they can put weight on their legs
Make sure the harness you use is for that type of job
Some harnesses are now made to catch the person falling and put them in a horizontal position until help arrives
Make sure tie-offs are tight as work permits them to be
Train your workers to move their legs and use footholds
Train all your workers that suspension longer than 5 minutes can be fatal to them

Remember prevention is the best medicine. Keep your workers well informed to this type of danger.
